Case Study 1:

Macbook Air – Could Not Get Past Login Screen

Issue

Client had been using laptop for last 16 months without and issues. One day the Mac Air would not let client past the login screen. The Mac was just hanging where the Apple logo appears and does not do anything past that. It’s as if it freezes, client also hear a some clicking noises from the Mac when it gets to that stage. It is trying to do something but just can’t get there! The operating system was Mountain Lion. The client had a lot of office documents on the Mac Air and also had his Bitcoin wallet on the Mac Air and had no backup.

Our Solution

We received hard drive in for recovery and quickly established that the hard drive had a mechanical problem with the motor and read write head assembley. We completed a platter exchange o the hard drive which involves removing the disk platters into another identical hard drive assembly and then imaged all sectors on hard drive. Data was backed up onto a 1tb hard drive and sent back to client within 48 hours.

Case Study 2:

Deleted Data From a Netgear ReadyNAS

Issue

Client has a 4 hard drive Netgear ReadyNAS system using Raid X. Client had been using the system for 3 years without any problems. Client started to have problems with the Netgear ReadyNAS system when she was removing backed up data from her computer to free up a bit of space. Client has a projects folder in her My Documents folder which was taking up a lot of space. Client decided to delete this folder as it was backed up on the Netgear ReadyNAS. Client deleted folder and then a few days later wanted some of the data for a meeting from the projects folder, so she connected to the Netgear ReadyNAS but the data was nowhere to be seen. The entire projects folder was nowhere to be seen and had vanished from the Netgear ReadyNAS. It seems when the client deleted the projects folder on her computer it deleted it on the Netgear ReadyNAS.

Our Solution

We received in the Netgear ReadyNAS and imaged all 4 drives on the system. We then examined the drive to locate the deleted folder by using our investigated tools looking at the binary code. We located the folder and extracted all data from it. We allowed client to download the data via our download service as she needed the data for a meeting.

Case Study 3:

Dell PowerEdge 1800 Server – Failed Rebuild

Issue

Dell PowerEdge 1800 Server was setup in a four disk raid 5 configuration running Linux. The client started to get on boot process that the disks were in a non-critical state. The server then indicated that one of the disks had failed in the server. Client replaced the failed disk with a new disk and started a rebuild. Rebuild process failed after 6%. Client restarted rebuild process but failed again after 6%.

Our Solution

We got client to remove 4 disks from server and got client to drop disks of at our office. We diagnosed the disks and there was a electronic fault with 2 of the disks. We upgraded the PCB electronics and reflashed the firmware on hard drives. We then imaged the hard drives and processed 100% of data within 24 hours.
